Søren Hagen (b. 1957) is a Danish painter living and working in Copenhagen. He is known for his works to be so incredibly photorealistic, that it is only with a closer look that you can see the brush strokes. In the age when it is so easy to create a documentation of reality with a camera, Hagen manages to accurately transfer what he sees onto the canvas. The everyday objects gain an extraordinary visual value. He is known for his ability to create a unique atmosphere in his photorealistic works. He often incorporates secrets and a sense of unease into his pieces, striking the zeitgeist. The paintings are based on an in-depth work with photography. They are created through a digital collage process using fragments from a series of photographs, and are then transferred to canvas. He sees himself as a chronicler of society, using his art as a way to convey his impressions and observations of the world. His paintings should be understood as a metaphorical representation of reality, rather than a literal copy of a specific location. Søren Hagen challenges the form of the surrounding world, especially art. Traditionally, we use the square to portray painting, we are encouraged to “think outside of the box”. The round canvas works of Søren Hagen contain all these qualities: precision, vivid colour compositions and detailed texture, together with heaviness, lightness, and softness in great proportions. It is a wonderful quality to be able to depict an atmosphere of the object’s surrounding and that is a skill that allows the viewer to really sense what they are seeing.  Søren Hagen has had many solo exhibitions in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands. His works are in numerous collections, such as: ARos/Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Kastrupgårdsamlingen, or Det Kongelige Bibliotek. Hagen is also a successful recipient of awards, notably C.O. Carlsens præmie af Akademirådets og Kunstnsersamfundets jury; Henry Heerups legat or Kunstmaler H.C. Koefoeds og C. Koefoeds legat.
